Valuation Frequently Asked Questions

  • A business valuation is a detailed, professional analysis of your company’s financial worth. It helps owners and decision-makers understand the true value of their business, whether for selling or buying, succession planning, estate or gift tax purposes, divorce matters, or strategic internal planning. A valuation provides a clear, objective view that supports confident, informed decisions.

  • We evaluate the key drivers of your business’s value using financial analysis, cash flow projections, market comparisons, and industry benchmarks. We also follow up with management through targeted qualitative and quantitative questions to gather additional insights about operations, strategy, and growth potential. All valuations are performed by licensed CPAs in accordance with AICPA business valuation standards.

  • We offer three main types of services:

    • Full Valuation: Comprehensive assessment for transactions, litigation, or strategic planning.

    • Calculation of Value: Limited scope calculations for specific purposes or internal planning.

    • Consulting: Advisory services focused on business strategy, planning, or targeted financial insights.

  • Timelines vary depending on the size and complexity of your business and how quickly financial documents are provided. As a guide, full valuations typically take 4 to 8 weeks, calculations 4 to 6 weeks, and consulting engagements often take less time, though some projects may take longer or shorter depending on specific circumstances. We maintain regular communication so you know what to expect and can meet critical deadlines.

  • For full valuations and calculations, you’ll receive a professional report detailing your company’s value, the methodology used, and any assumptions or key considerations. For consulting engagements, you may receive schedules, analyses, or other deliverables tailored to your needs. The specific deliverables for your engagement will be clearly outlined and agreed upon in the engagement letter. We review drafts with you to ensure clarity, address questions, and finalize materials you can confidently rely on.

  • Costs vary depending on the type of valuation and the level of analysis required. We offer flexible, client-focused services including full valuations, limited calculations, or consulting projects, and can stage the work to fit your needs and budget. Most engagements are billed hourly, with rates tailored to different client requirements.

We understand that cost is an important consideration. If budget is a concern, please let us know, we can discuss options and tailor an approach that aligns with your needs and objectives. While there are lower-cost alternatives in the market, the depth of analysis, experience, and rigor applied can vary. With over 30 years of experience, Cogence Group delivers thoughtful, well-supported valuations designed to withstand scrutiny.

  • Yes. We can act as a joint appraiser when parties agree to a joint valuation engagement and select us to provide a single valuation report used by all sides. In a joint appraisal, our role is to apply objective financial and valuation principles to deliver a neutral, agreed‑upon business value, subject to the scope and instructions set by the parties.

When parties engage a joint appraiser, we work with counsel for all relevant parties to define the engagement parameters, data requirements, timing, and deliverables, and then deliver a valuation report consistent with those agreed terms.
